This the hour when birds wait, watching for final prey before heading off to wherever they reside for the hours of darkness. That time between day and night, the hour before daylight ceases, when we rush to finish all that needs light.
These moments of ‘between’ in the big picture of things are just that, moments. The soft light of the setting sun on a winter’s afternoon is soon gone as the long cold night hastens. This between, “the period separating (two points in time).“
Whilst there are many moments of between, we also live in the midst of a great big between. We live between the cross of Christ and the return of Christ. The Saviour has come, the penalty for sin has been paid, as He the innocent one died a sinners death. But He rose again, conquering both sin and death. What’s more, He ascended to heaven, where He is preparing a future home for all who follow. We live in this time of gathering, the awaiting of that future forever home. This between, a time where people can come to Him, put their trust in Him, prepare for their future with Him and share with others that they too will be ready for His return. This the evening of busy activity, and yet we wait not for darkness, but LIGHT…
The sun shall be no more
your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
give you light;
but the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Your sun shall no more go down,
nor your moon withdraw itself;
for the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your days of mourning shall be ended.
Your people shall all be righteous;
they shall possess the land forever,
the branch of my planting, the work of my hands,
that I might be glorified.
The least one shall become a clan,
and the smallest one a mighty nation;
I am the LORD;
in its time I will hasten it.
(Isaiah 60:19-22 ESV)
In this time of between we wait not for the setting of the sun, but for the dawning of a new day where the LORD will be our everlasting light and mourning shall be no more. As a bird in the evening knows what is to come, do you have your eyes fixed on what is to come? Are you ready?
